The Afrihealthnet is an online project powered by the Central Medical Centre. The project is part of a GNUsolidario effort to bring affordable healthcare services to Nigerians.
The Online Projee ct is a collaborative effort between Central Medical Centre of Nigeria and Thymbra of Argentina to improve the quality of healthcare services provided to Nigerians. The system has been put in place to centralize healthcare records while providing a paperless hospital management system for hospitals, health centres and the likes.
The AHN goal is to provide a universal Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Hospital Information System (HIS), so doctors and institutions all over the world, especially those amongst the developing world, will gain from a centralized, high quality, secure and scalable system. AHN seeks to enhance collaboration between health professionals and institutions with its open source systems. The HIS is based on the medical module for OpenERP from Thymbra and uses industry standards in order to produce valid statistical data for epidemiological research.
Goal : The AHN goal is to provide a universal EMR / HIS, where developing countries can also benefit.
AHN EMR and HIS offers:
- 100% paperless patient history taking and examination
- Patient Administration (creation, evaluations / consultations, history ... )
- Patient Socioeconomic Analysis
- Doctor Administration
- Lab Administration
- Medicine / Drugs information
- Medical stock and supply chain management
- Demographics and other statistical reports
The data model is designed to
centralize the information on our databases in order to eliminate
duplications.
On the other hand, the AHN system optimizes collaboration and communication between health professionals. For example, a doctor may request a specific lab test for a patient. This is processed by the pathologist who diagnoses it and inputs the result on the system. The doctor now has all the analysis information linked to the patient's chart. A patient could as well fill prescriptions from his doctor as long as the pharmacist concerned has access to our system.
The system allows for attachment of documents (X-rays, Biopsy results, ... ) to the Patient's chart. This helps to make patient records available to consultants who might not be residing within the same geographical region as the patient in question.
The AHN system also ensures that the information gathered is standard. To achieve this, the ICD-10 code is used for pathologies / diseases diagnoses. For example, instead of typing an arbitrary name for the condition, the doctor is able to choose from up to 14000 mutual exclusively classified diseases. This is very important for epidemiological and other statistical studies.
AHN understands the need for privacy on patient records. Patient data is protected by the use of encoded identifiers which could be changed only at the request of the patient.
These features generally provide an effective, paperless and fast way of practising medicine. Other companies such Ibeat Global Investments, fDES and the Global Medical Missions are actively participating in this joint effort.
